A mock test is not the exam. Only a real IELTS test produces an official band score, recorded on a Test Report Form. What a mock gives you is an assessment against the four published criteria and an indicative band — which is the same wording IELTS uses for its own official practice test. Who actually marks the test?

Mike Wattie, personally — a former official IELTS examiner and Deen Cox's co-author on four bilingual IELTS textbooks. He conducts every Speaking mock and marks every Writing submission himself.

Is this the same as the "10 mock tests" in the Practice Workbook?

No — they do different jobs, and it's worth being clear about it.

The Practice Workbook contains ten self-scored mock tests. They are cue cards, framework grids and self-scoring boxes: you record yourself, then assess your own answer against the criteria and the model answers provided. That's practice, and it's included in the ¥88 book price.

A mock test on this page is marked by a former examiner. Mike conducts the Speaking interview live or reads your written script, and returns a band estimate against the official descriptors with written feedback. That's assessment, it's a separate service, and it's booked and paid directly with Mike.

Most candidates use both: the Workbook to build the habit, an examiner-marked mock to find out where they actually stand before test day.

How does payment work?

Enquiries and booking come through this page. Payment for the mock test itself is arranged directly with Mike once your slot or submission window is confirmed — it does not go through the deencoxielts.com shop.

What timezone are Speaking mocks scheduled in?

Mike schedules around Beijing time where possible. Tell us your preferred day and time in the form and we'll confirm a slot that works on both ends.

Speaking mocks run on 腾讯会议 (Tencent Meeting), WeChat video, or Zoom — whichever you already use. No VPN needed for the first two. 口语模考可使用腾讯会议或微信视频，无需VPN。

Can I book both Speaking and Writing?

Yes — select "Both" in the form below. Most candidates within a month of their test date find it useful to have a full picture across both papers.

How is this different from the free feedback in the free resources or lessons?

The free lessons and resources teach the method. A mock test is a formal, timed simulation with an official band estimate from a former examiner — the closest thing to sitting the real test before you actually do.
