Scoring Briefing ·
One bad paper doesn't have to mean the whole test again.
One Skill Retake is available in mainland China. It lets you re-sit a single paper for 1,400 RMB instead of 1,990 for the full test — but the eligibility is narrower than most summaries admit, the window is short, and there is one warning on the official page that almost nobody repeats. Every figure here is sourced. Download as PDF →
The rules
What it actually is.
Every line below is published on the official Chinese-mainland IELTS site. Nothing here is my interpretation.
| What you retake
Any one of the four papers — 听、说、读、写某一单科. Not two, not the whole test. |
| Who is eligible
— only candidates who sat a full BC computer-delivered IELTS. If your original test was on paper, or was not a BC computer test, this is not open to you. |
| The window
“自考试日(即原成绩单上注明的考试日期)起60天内可注册并参加一次单科重考” — 60 days from the original test date, and once per original test. |
| Where 考点 |
Ten test centres across six cities: Beijing (3), Shanghai (2), Chongqing (2), Guangzhou (1), Ningbo (1), Changsha (1). Not nationwide. |
| The fee
1,400 RMB (报名费1400元人民币), against 1,990 RMB for a full IELTS test as of 1 January 2026. |
| What you get 成绩单 |
A new Test Report Form carrying the new score for the retaken paper, your original three, and a recalculated overall. The retaken paper is flagged on it. “考生可以自由选择使用原始成绩单或新成绩单申请院校” — you choose which report to submit. |
What one paper is worth
One paper can move the overall a full band.
This is the same result slip from the overall band briefing, run through the same official rounding rule.
26.5 ÷ 4 = 6.625, nearer to 6.5 than to 7.0.
27.5 ÷ 4 = 6.875, nearer to 7.0 than to 6.5. One paper. 6.5 to 7.0. And if the requirement was “7 in each band”, this slip now also clears Writing — though Speaking at 6.5 would still fail it.
The part worth thinking about 真正值得想清楚的地方
A full retake asks you to produce all four scores again.
The 590 RMB is the small part of the difference.
| What a full retake asks
You sit all four papers again, and the new report carries four new scores. To beat your current result you must improve the weak paper and reproduce the three good ones on the same morning — the 7 in Listening, the 7 in Reading, the 6.5 in Speaking. They do not carry over. |
| What One Skill Retake asks
You sit one paper. The other three are carried onto the new report as they stand. Your preparation, your nerves and your test-day energy all go into the paper that actually needs them. |
| Neither destroys your original
Your original Test Report Form remains what it is either way, and with One Skill Retake the official page states you may choose which report to submit. Nobody loses a score by trying — the cost is money, time and preparation, not your existing result. |
Before you get excited 先别急
The eligibility is narrower than the headlines.
| BC computer test only 仅限 BC 机考 |
The official wording is 仅面向BC雅思机考考生. A paper test does not qualify, and you should confirm your own sitting qualifies before planning around it. |
| Six cities, ten centres
Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Ningbo, Changsha. If you tested elsewhere, the retake still means travelling. |
| The window is shorter than 60 days
The 60 days run from your test date, not from the day your results arrive. Computer-delivered results take roughly 3–5 days, so in practice you have around 55 days to decide, book a seat at one of ten centres, prepare, and sit it. |
| Once, and one paper
One retake per original test, one paper only. If two papers are below the line, this does not solve your problem — a full retake does. |
The line almost nobody repeats
Check that your institution accepts it — first.
| The warning
“报名前考生应与成绩接收机构确认是否认可雅思单科重考成绩” — before registering, confirm with the institution receiving your score whether it accepts One Skill Retake results. |
| Why it matters more than the fee
A cheaper score you cannot submit is worth nothing. Acceptance is decided by each receiving institution, not by the test centre, and it is not universal. This is the step to take before you pay, not after. |
| What to ask, in writing
Ask the admissions office directly whether they accept an IELTS One Skill Retake Test Report Form, and keep the reply. Ask about the specific course, not the university in general — requirements are often set at department level. If the answer is no, your original report is still valid and a full retake is the route. |
Deciding
Which paper, and is it worth 1,400?
| If… | Then |
|---|---|
| Your requirement is a minimum in each band, and one paper is below it
This is exactly what One Skill Retake is for. Retake that paper. Nothing else can rescue it, and a full retake would ask you to reproduce three scores you already have. |
| Two or more papers are below the line
One Skill Retake cannot fix this — one paper only, once. A full retake is the route. |
| Your requirement is overall only, and you are half a band short
Work out which single paper is cheapest for you to move, then check the sum. Half a band on any one paper moves the average by 0.125 — sometimes that crosses a rounding boundary, as above, and sometimes it does not. Do the arithmetic before you pay. |
| You were close and think the marking was harsh
A remark is a different route with different economics, and it has its own deadline. That is a separate briefing — but do not let the 60-day retake window lapse while you wait on one. |
How this was compiled
What is quoted, what is arithmetic, what is opinion.
| Quoted | The eligibility wording, the 60-day window, the fee, the centre list, the Test Report Form description and the institutional-acceptance warning are published on the official Chinese-mainland IELTS site and are quoted, not paraphrased, where they carry conditions. |
| Arithmetic | The two worked sums use the published rule — the average of the four papers rounded to the nearest half band. 26.5 ÷ 4 = 6.625 and 27.5 ÷ 4 = 6.875. Check them; that is the point of using arithmetic. |
| Opinion | Two things here are judgement and are marked as such: that a different paper slipping on the day is the common failure mode of a full retake, and that the acceptance check matters more than the fee. Neither is measured. |
| Not advice about your case | Whether a retake is worth it depends on your requirement, your centre, your dates and your institution. This page sets out the rules and the arithmetic so you can decide; it is not a recommendation to book anything. |
| Credentials | Certified by IDP Education in Understanding the Assessment Criteria for both Speaking and Writing. IDP is one of the three organisations that jointly own IELTS.
