Ten days to Band 7 — ten days from where?
十天到七分 · 从哪里开始
IELTS publishes the honest figure on its own site: on average three months to improve by up to half a band — and the fastest improvers are those starting below 5.5, which is not who the ten-day advert is aimed at. Plus the three kinds of candidate who genuinely do jump quickly, why a named missing feature moves faster than vague effort, and four questions to ask before paying anyone, including me. Two out of three is not that band
完全符合规则 · 教师简报
A briefing for teachers. One sentence printed under the official descriptors decides how every band is awarded — a candidate must fully fit the positive features at that level, so two of three is the band below. Plus why Pronunciation has no descriptor at Bands 7, 5 and 3, and what IDP says a teacher may and may not do with the public criteria. Read the briefing →  ·  Download the PDF →
Full Fit Marksheet · free tool
评分特征对照表 · 免费工具
Two hundred and three tick boxes, paraphrased from the published descriptors across Bands 4 to 9, for Speaking and Writing Tasks 1 and 2. Tick what a performance actually shows and it tells you which band it fully meets and exactly which features are missing at the next one. Print it blank and work on paper if you prefer. Open the marksheet →
The memorised answer
背诵答案
The word “memorised” really is in the official Speaking band descriptors — at Bands 1, 2 and 3, the bottom three of the nine, and never above them. Every mention explains why there is nothing left to credit, not what earns a score. Plus the three tells, and what to prepare instead of sentences. Read the briefing →  ·  Download the PDF →
Why Chinese candidates plateau at 6.5
中国考生为何卡在 6.5
A read-on-the-page briefing rather than a download. The four layers of first-language transfer, the seven highest-impact Writing fixes, and which assessment criterion each error costs marks under — with a note on how the catalogue was compiled and what it does not claim. Read the briefing →  ·  Download the PDF →
The screen changes how you write
机考简报 · 2026 年 9 月 1 日
From 1 September 2026 IELTS in mainland China is computer-delivered only. The content is unchanged — what changes is your writing process, and that is what Coherence & Cohesion assesses. Six adjustments, and a note on why a faster result is not the same as a better one. Read the briefing →  ·  Download the PDF →
Your 7 is not a 7
总分的算法
How the Overall Band Score is actually calculated — the official rounding rules quoted and worked, why “overall 7” and “7 in each band” are two different requirements, and what an advertised score can and cannot tell you. Read the briefing →  ·  Download the PDF →
One Skill Retake
单科重考
Re-sit a single paper for 1,400 RMB instead of 1,990 for the whole test. The official rules, what one paper is worth to your overall, who is actually eligible, and the acceptance warning on the official page that almost nobody repeats. Read the briefing →  ·  Download the PDF →
What changes on 1 September
9月1日之后
Mainland China stops paper IELTS on 1 September 2026. The change almost nobody posts: Listening transfer time falls from ten minutes to two. What that does to your technique, the four other genuine differences, and the official statement that the test itself has not changed. Read the briefing →  ·  Download the PDF →
Can you charm the examiner?
讨好考官有用吗
Four Speaking criteria, 25% each, and all four are about language — there is no fifth called “the examiner liked you”. Every Speaking test is recorded, reviewed every six months, and auto-re-marked when your scores diverge. The official Chinese page denies “压分” by name. Read the briefing →  ·  Download the PDF →
Does the city change your score?
换个城市考
Videos claim some Chinese cities mark more generously. The official IELTS China site lists that exact rumour by name — and the city averages those videos screenshot come from an official report that states the figures should not be read that way. What genuinely does differ by centre, and what does not. Read the briefing →  ·  Download the PDF →
Who can actually give you a band score?
谁能给你打分
IDP publishes it plainly: teachers should not award band scores using the public descriptors, but can point to the features of the criteria your work matches. Even IELTS's own practice test, marked by official IELTS markers, gives only an indicative band. Plus five questions to ask before you pay for a marked mock. Read the briefing →  ·  Download the PDF →
How many right is a Band 7?
原始分对照表
IELTS publishes the Listening and Reading conversion itself: Band 7 is 30 correct out of 40, and Band 8 is 35. The same 30 answers is a Band 7 in Academic Reading and a Band 6 in General Training. The official table stops at Band 8. Read the briefing →  ·  Download the PDF →

Seventy-two real Part 1 questions with proper timing — fifteen seconds to think, forty-five to answer. It records you on your own device, then asks the three questions that decide whether that was a Band 6 answer or a Band 7 one. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored.

  • Random questions across twelve topics, or pick one topic
  • Think time and speaking time, timed as in the test
  • Record and play back — on your device, never uploaded
  • Self-audit against A-R-E before anyone tells you anything

Part 2
Trainer

The long turn is where most candidates dry up, usually at about forty seconds. Fifty-nine real cue cards, a prep minute you cannot cut short, and a two-minute clock you have to fill — with the four P.P.F.E. stages marked as they pass, so you can see which one you skipped.

  • 59 cue cards across the six Master Story categories
  • Timed prep minute — and a stage tracker during the two minutes
  • Record and play back — on your device, never uploaded
  • Four-stage self-audit, and it tells you how long you actually spoke

Part 3

Part 3 is where Band 6 and Band 7 separate. The questions stop being about you and start being about people, societies and governments — and candidates who stay personal and concrete stall. Forty-nine real questions, no preparation time, and the four F-E-E-L moves that turn an opinion into an argument.

  • 49 questions across six themes, no prep time — as in the test
  • Live stage tracker: Find Core, Explain Why, Evidence, Link / Limit
  • Checks the two openers that cost you before you start

Who Told
You That?

There is a new kind of wrong advice about IELTS, and it comes with a citation. Four real claims found on preparation websites in August 2026 — each naming Cambridge, IDP or ielts.org, each citing a document that does not appear to exist. How to tell, and where real information actually lives.

  • Four unverifiable claims, quoted in full — no sites named
  • Why “examiner guidance” is never a public source
  • Three questions that catch most of it
  • The three places real IELTS information lives

Who Is
Teaching You?

Passing a test measures your English. It does not measure your ability to teach it. A high scorer can tell you what they did — genuinely useful. What most cannot do is look at your work and say which criterion is capping you. Five tests you can apply yourself, in one conversation, before you pay anybody.

  • Written with the author’s conflict of interest declared on page one
  • What a high scorer genuinely can give you — and it is not nothing
  • Why one person’s lucky essay becomes fifty identical essays

The Speaking
Test Myths

Four things candidates believe about the examiner — and what the British Council actually publishes. Your accent does not matter unless it makes you hard to follow. The examiner does not care whether they agree with you. Their silence is not a verdict.

  • Why a clear Chinese accent can still score Band 8 in Pronunciation
  • Choose the opinion you can develop, not the one you think is safe
  • The examiner has no duty to prompt you — and why that matters
  • What a memorised answer actually invites

Everyone tells you there is a penalty for writing under 250 words. Nobody can show you where it is written. Four widely-read sources, four different answers — and the one published document that settles the practical question completely.

  • What the instruction actually says, and what it does not
  • Why four sources contradict each other flatly
  • The mechanism nobody argues about — Band 5 Task Response
  • Four practical points, and the truth about an upper limit

The Word List
Myth

Search for IELTS vocabulary and you are offered the same product a hundred times over: the “official” 3,000 words. Half that claim is true and measurable. The other half is false, and believing it is a reliable way to stall at Band 6. This briefing separates the two using published corpus research and the test producers’ own guidance.

  • What the corpus studies actually found — coverage figures for Listening and Reading, with the range honestly stated
  • Why no official list exists, and what “official” does not mean on a book cover
  • Why memorised lists fail: paraphrase, distractors and the Band 5.5–6.5 failure pattern

The Big Word
Myth

The published Band 6 descriptor for Lexical Resource covers a candidate who reaches for less common vocabulary and does not quite land it. That is the big-word strategy, described by the people who write the test, and filed under the band you are trying to leave. This briefing sets out what the criteria actually reward — precision, collocation, register and flexibility — and what to swap instead.

  • What changes between Band 6, 7 and 8 — control of the word, not its rarity
  • The three ways a “big word” costs you marks: collocation, register, precision
  • Five worked upgrades in which not one replacement is a rare word
  • Five checks you can run on your own writing tonight, and full references

The Computer
Test Myths

Paper-based IELTS ends in mainland China on 1 September 2026, and IELTS for UKVI already stopped on 1 July. This briefing sets out the dates, the four things that genuinely change, and the four myths currently being sold as urgency.

  • The confirmed dates, taken from the official announcement
  • The one change that actually affects technique: ten minutes becomes two

Marking
Calibration

Most of us mark by instinct, then worry we are being too generous or too harsh. This sheet calibrates that instinct against something concrete: the same answer at Band 6, Band 7 and Band 8, with the exact features that move it up identified after each set. The content barely changes between bands — the language does.

  • Part 1 and Part 2 answers at three band levels, in full
  • What lifts 6 to 7, and what lifts 7 to 8, point by point
  • Cover the notes, decide for yourself, then compare

  • Five timed stages — and an empty board while they write
  • Why Explain comes before Evidence, and how to make the class discover it

A Note on These Resources

What's free — and what isn't.

Most of these PDFs are extracted from the IELTS Series; others are original briefings written for this site. New ones are added regularly. Each one gives you a real, usable reference tool — the kind of page students photograph and keep in their phones for exam-room use. They're free because they solve specific problems without teaching the underlying method.

What isn't free: the fourteen frameworks that generate original answers rather than memorised ones. The paragraph-by-paragraph model answers with criteria alignment tables. The 557 audio files — shadowing drills, model answers, cue cards and full mock tests. The Chinese Learner Insight sections for every criterion. That's what the books contain, and that's what ¥68 to ¥308 buys.

If any of these free tools makes a real difference to your preparation, the books make the difference bigger. If they don't — you've lost nothing.

Want the full method behind the free tools?

Each PDF above is one page from a book. The books themselves contain the frameworks, the model answers, the audio drills, and the Chinese Learner Insight sections that turn the reference material into a working method.
